Webster’s Dictionary defines learning as the act of “gaining knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience.” Study is defined as the “application of the mental faculties to the acquisition of knowledge.” These two concepts are so intertwined that it is difficult to separate them. In order to learn, we must be able to study and in order to study, we must learn proper study skills.

Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills, by Bonnie Terry, M.Ed. is “A fast, fun approach to improve writing and study skills.” Spending just a few minutes a day using the principles in this book, students will learn to master the study skills and techniques necessary for academic success and will enjoy an increase in self-confidence that will last a lifetime.

Bonnie Terry is an educator with over 30 years’ experience teaching regular education and special education students. She is both a teacher and a developer of educational games and books that are used worldwide. She knows and understands the impact proper study skills can have on the ability to learn.

Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills is a well-organized, clearly-written guide providing practical advice for such areas as note-taking, organizing material, comparing and contrasting subject matter, converting notes to paragraphs, writing paragraphs and essays, and improving writing techniques. As noted in Better Study Skills, “When we organize and categorize information, the information is much easier to use, retain, and recall.” The book is divided into four parts and provides useful study tips and a variety of forms designed to be used to increase organizational skills for easier utilization of information.   Part I offers simple hints to begin “studying”. Students are advised to choose a comfortable and distraction-free study area, to have proper supplies handy and organized and to prepare a weekly schedule that includes both academic and other activities.  Included in the book are suggested supplies lists and blank weekly planning calendars.

Part II includes organization forms for use by third through high school level students.

The section begins with basic story organizers and expands to include book report forms, note-taking forms, and paragraph and essay forms. For instance, the Story/Book organizer is noted to be useful “for stories or narratives where there is a beginning, middle, and end. This form can be used for a simple book report,” and the Note Book Note Taker is a fill-in-the-blank form that makes note-taking from any textbook much easier. Fill-in-the-blank forms and completed sample forms allow students to see how information is connected and to organize it into useful sequences.

Part III offers study, note-taking, test-taking, paragraph and essay writing tips and, again, provides relevant supporting examples and references to useful forms. Part IV is a valuable easy reference section. In just a few pages, students are provided with definitions and examples of the eight spelling patterns in the English language, capitalization and punctuation rules, definitions of parts of speech, types of sentences and a guideline to writing bibliographies. This section is an excellent resource for the most essential rules of the English language.

Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills is a well-organized and clearly written guide to improving writing and study skills. Unlike other guides, students are offered valuable tips to improve study skills and are provided with the forms to apply those tips.  Using the tips in this book, students of any age will improve their reading comprehension and study habits by learning to organize and process written information. Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills provides the necessary tools that will make learning an enjoyable experience. For additional information, please visit www.bonnieterrylearning.com.  L.F.
