Elemento™ - A Fun Way To Learn

Elemento™ provides a recreational way to learn the Table of Elements. Elements are substances or materials that are composed of only one type of atom and are essential for the study of chemistry and other branches of science.

It is well-known among many homeschooling families that the best way to learn something – especially something which has memorization attached to it, is by making a game of it. Elemento™ does just that – you are so busy playing the game that you do not think about what you are learning and committing to memory. After just a few times of playing Elemento™, the elements’ relationships, symbols, functions and atomic weights begin to sink in; if one really dedicated time to playing the game, the entire table could be memorized in a fairly short time.

Using a vinyl game board, players learn about outer space, American and International biographies, while attempting to be the first to move along the rocket’s path from Saturn to the Space Station. Three sets of game cards are included and are divided by age group.  2nd and 3rd grade level players learn about outer space, 4th through 6th grade players learn about American biographies, and 7th through 12th grade players learn about International biographies. A truly exciting aspect of this game, and one that is found in many of the games developed by Bonnie Terry, is that all grade levels can play simultaneously. For families with multiple children, this approach to education can be a lifesaver.  Also important, is that the game is self-correcting so everyone succeeds every time s/he plays.

When Margaret S. Emmons visited Jerusalem in 1992, sixteen years ago, she did not foresee that she would later develop a business inspired by her travels.

While in Israel, Emmons picked up a souvenir game, “Jerusalem Picture Card” and brought back to Iowa. She began playing the card game with her grandson and he enjoyed it so much that he soon began to share it with his friends.

“They liked the game so much and learned a lot, it was a good learning method,” Emmons says.

When Emmons realized how much the card game enhanced her grandson’s knowledge of geography, she began to create games of states and cities modeled after the popular classics, Go Fish and Authors. Games featuring American and Canadian destinations became popular with her local elementary and middle schoolers. Next, she was inspired to make a professional game and because of her experiences she chose Africa.

The Wonder Number Learning system was created by Melbourne T. Brown in the early 1970’s. Mr. Brown was a schoolteacher who, despite his many efforts, was unable to find a suitable teaching method that assisted struggling students in their pursuit for an understanding of basic math concepts. Finally, he decided to create a method of his very own, and developed the ingenious Wonder Number Learning System – which is actually a series of board games complete with spinner, playing chips and an instructional DVD containing complete video lessons, so the homeschooling family can combine “play” with “study”!

Wonder Number consists of a brightly-colored game board, divided into numbered squares from 1 to 100. An array of math concepts is identified symbolically on the board. For instance, each prime number has a circle around it; even numbers are identified with a small blue “2” and odd numbers are those lacking the blue 2. Square numbers are enclosed in a square and are the same color as the square root, with all factors for a number being displayed in pairs and possessing a specific color. Therefore, just by looking carefully at the playing board, the math student can learn a number of basic concepts! Since every number on the board has all of its factors listed in its square block and the placement is repetitive throughout the board, it is extremely easy for even the youngest children to find and identify the numbers and become familiar with their traits.
