Concise Curriculum

Integrating the Standards: Social Studies, Reading, and Language Arts is a student workbook for upper elementary students. We currently have two upper elementary workbooks. Our workbooks are an entire course of study for social studies with reading and language arts skills throughout the book.

Ready-Made Lesson Plans!!!

Our workbooks provide a complete program, with no lesson plan time for the teacher/parent! All lesson plans are done for you! All directions and examples are given in the workbook. The student is given clear directions and examples, and the teacher/parent is there to guide the student and answer questions. The teacher/parent is relieved of hours of preparation time. A free answer key/teacher’s guide comes with each book.

These student workbooks can be used as your entire course of study, or can be used to supplement your course of study. An entire year of social studies, language, and reading are all in one book!

Language skills include: parts of speech, verb usage, mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, spelling and usage) writing complete sentences, identifying sentence fragments, identifying types of sentences (simple, compound, complex) identifying kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory).

Reading skills include: reading comprehension (answering basic comprehension questions and answering higher level comprehension questions, also inference questions)

Research:
Research shows that children retain more when using an integrated curriculum. Children are also more engaged in the lesson when it is integrated. Children are able to recall more material and things start to “click” faster with an integrated approach. Instead of learning sentences about unknown people and places, the student can connect to important historical people and events.
For example:
Identify the nouns in the following sentences:

(the traditional textbook) Sally and Jane walked to the store.

(Concise Curriculum’s integrated workbook)
Eli Whitney invented a new machine called the cotton gin.

While the skill is still the same, our workbooks reinforce historical facts. Students are actually getting triple benefits (social studies, reading, and language arts) at one time.

Other benefits:
Students learn three content areas at one time when using the Integrating the Standards curriculum. Skills are no longer taught in isolation. Reading and language arts skills are constantly reinforced during the social studies time. Some students who have difficulty in reading and language arts get an extra “boost” during social studies time.
