Calvert School
by Michael Leppert

In the homeschooling world, while it is very helpful when a company springs up virtually out of nowhere and begins offering online instructional programs to homeschooling families, it is even better when an established company or organization does so. Calvert School in Baltimore is such an organization. The bricks-and-mortar Calvert School has been serving local students and distance learners for over 108 years and now, Calvert offers the same high-level academic products via the Internet.

Calvert has served homeschooling families with its famous “curriculum in a box” correspondence programs, with teacher grading and oversight or without. Everything is in the box, down to pencils and erasers. The parents have to buy nothing else to begin right in teaching a Kindergarten or First Grade child (or any other primary grade). The Teacher’s Manual gives clear and detailed guidance on how to move through the program day by day. If the family opts in to the Teacher Advisory program, help is just an e-mail away. For those who enjoy a traditional schooling experience, Calvert is tops. Their books and other materials are the highest possible quality in both content and form, written by some of the best academic developers in the country and combined into a unified whole that is fun to use and academically successful.

It might be easy for homeschooling families to take for granted the relative, basic freedom we enjoy in teaching our own children, but such an atmosphere of freedom would not be possible without the pioneering efforts of many professional educators along the way. These people possessed the vision to realize that children learn best in other ways than those promulgated in the public school model. They also had faith that they could work with parents, rather than independent of them.

One such pioneer is Dr. Pat Montgomery, founder of Clonlara School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1967, Dr. Pat pursued her then-rare philosophy of a student-centered curriculum, whereby the student participates actively in his/her own education, with the instructor acting as a knowledgeable guide, facilitating the child’s natural curiosity. Dr. Pat opened the bricks-and-mortar Clonlara School, which still serves local students who wish to enjoy a fully-accredited and unique atmosphere for learning.

Welcome to the world of online learning!

High School eLearning specializes in providing interactive online high school electives. Our courses are set up in the same course management system used by many universities. In addition to learning about subjects that interest them, students also gain experience managing their own learning, using an online learning system and trying out technology tools that are essential in today’s workplace and University settings. This student-centered learning environment is the perfect place for students to enter the world of online learning.

High School eLearning is not a school - parents are still an important part of their student’s education, even if they are not “experts” in the subjects the students are learning! Our online curriculum allows every student to work independently on each course, guided by a weekly checklist of textbook reading assignments, online interactive lessons and games - and for some courses, hands on projects.

Our online courses are not “text on a screen” or a “course in a box”. Teacher’s manuals and grading keys are a thing of the past. Every course has a textbook, workbook or kit to accompany the online interactive lessons and activities. After each week’s activities, the online self-grading quizzes help students to check their knowledge of the subject as they progress through the course. They can look at their quiz answers and repeat the quizzes to correct misconceptions and improve their score. Everything is tracked in the student’s individual online gradebook.

One of the original homeschool curriculum creators is also the premier K-12 distance-learning school for homeschoolers all over the globe. Oak Meadow is a well-known name to any “veteran” homeschooling family, having begun providing creative curriculum products and distance learning instruction in the late 1970s.

Lawrence Williams and his late wife, Bonnie, began Oak Meadow as a day school in Ojai, California in 1975. Lawrence had a B.S. in Marketing and an M.A. in Elementary Education and had been influenced by the Waldorf educational philosophy during a visit to Switzerland in the early 1970s. At Oak Meadow School, he taught his own children, as well as children of a small group of local families, using his own Waldorf-inspired philosophy of holistic teaching.

Compliments a Homeschooler ’s Education
with Unique Electives

By Linda Pliagas

The educational wave of the future is online distance learning and VHS, Inc. (Virtual High School) is leading the way by offering unique courses that are unavailable in brick-and-mortar institutions. The non-profit school has been in existence since 1996 and prides itself in providing students with “a quality educational experience,” says Mr. Dana Koch, director of global services.

Each course is taught by a certified teacher, the majority of the instructors at Virtual High School have a master’s degree. Koch says that many of the professors choose the courses they teach “out of the passion” they have for the subjects.

Teachers at Virtual High School frequently monitor student activity, so they are aware if a student is falling behind. The experience is “as close to a classroom experience as you can get without everyone being in one room at the same time,” Koch explains.
