Whether we admit it or not, math is something we do on a daily basis. We use it to describe people and things (height, weight, age), calculate costs, tell time, to obey speed limits, etc. We need math and we use it continuously, yet it is often considered one of the most difficult and boring subjects to learn.

The Math Zone designed by Bonnie Terry, M.Ed. is a math card game that teaches basic math skills in a unique and fun way. Bonnie Terry is an educator with over 30 years’ experience teaching regular education and special education students. She has a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education and a M.Ed. degree in Special Education.  She is both a teacher and a developer of educational games and books that are used worldwide.

The Math Zone takes students beyond the routine completion of pages and pages of math problems and into the world of educational games, a source of enjoyable learning opportunities. Students use adding, multiplying, subtracting, and dividing to learn how numbers shrink and grow.

The game is divided into three color decks, purple showing the operation (multiplication, addition, subtraction, division) to be performed, teal with low numbers for use by 7 – 9 year olds, and magenta with high numbers for use by 9 years olds and older. Each number card provides two numbers. Players choose a card from the top of the colored number deck that corresponds to the appropriate skill level and then choose a card from the operation deck. Using pencils and paper, players perform the appropriate math operation on the two numbers shown on their number cards. When they finish the calculation, players turn over their number cards to see if they performed the calculation correctly. Players getting correct answers get to add the answer to their point total. No points are received for incorrect answers. Included in each color deck are Bonus and Sorry cards bringing added excitement to the game, giving players a chance to double answer points or causing them to lose half of the answer points. Games consist of as many turns as the players decide, as long as all players receive the same number of turns, and the player with the most number of points at the end of the game is the winner.

The Math Zone is an exciting and fun way for any age group to learn and practice basic math skills. The game can be played for extended periods of time or in short intervals if time is limited. The near-endless combination of number and operation cards eliminates the possibility of memorizing problems, providing each player an equal opportunity to win. Point totals can change quickly depending on the operation card drawn. Every flip of a card will offer a new learning opportunity and no player will be able to claim victory until the final card flip and calculation is made.
