IIf you’ve ever put together a school or community children’s concert, you know just how difficult it is to select appropriate music, find vocal and orchestral accompaniment and, finally, to get permission to legally use the music. Good news—Classroom Classics offers a “pain free” solution to your production woes. All you need to add is location and, of course, singing children.

Classroom Classics was founded 20 years ago by teacher, Sam Francis, with the help of record producer Cliff Maag. Since its inception, this innovative company has time and again succeeded in reaching its admirable goal of helping children learn important values and concepts through music, and has been honored with the “Champion of Liberty Award” given by America’s Freedom Foundation.

Incorporating Music with the Magical World of Movies
Review by Linda Pliagas

As a child in parochial elementary school, my fellow students and I enjoyed it when we a video could replace a spoken lecture by the teacher, some things just never change.

Incorporating television into a learning program is a great way to make subjects come to life for children; it also allows parents an opportunity to join in on the fun and make learning a fun family event.

Educational entertainment has reached a new level of quality and sophistication
with “The Composers’ Specials”, a series of six HBO Original films, which
eloquently tell the story of famous composers who are touched by a child’s
presence and wisdom.

The DVD series magically transport viewers into a historical timeline, giving people a glimpse of the life of some of the most famous composers the world has ever known.

The string family of orchestral instruments is one of the oldest and most-written-for. String quartets (two violins, viola and cello) by the great European composers abound and even modern avant-garde composers such as Bela Bartok have explored the beauty of the string family to the great pleasure of listeners everywhere.

Ms. Eden Vaning-Rosen, an award-winning concert violinist and teacher, has developed methods for learning three of the four instruments in the string section. Only the doublebass is omitted. Ms. Vaning-Rosen demonstrates her skill as a teacher and musician in the great care she has taken to cover everything a young student needs to know. Her course is composed of books and Videos/CDs, to provide visual explanations of the material covered in the books, and then some.

Music Goals

The discipline of Music Theory is the foundation of all of our Western music. The term is a bit misleading, not being a "theory" at all, but being the basic "factual" information and skill-building that composers and musical performers then utilize to create complex and often mind-boggling artistic works. Learning how tones function in pitch and duration and how they subsequently allow for the creation of soothing or disturbing music, is the why and wherefore of Music Theory.

These two programs provide the music student of any age, a great way to practice and ultimately master, all of the skills of Music Theory over a period of many years, from very young to college level. Every student of music, whether deadly serious or with a merely recreational bent, should avail himself with these two excellent practice tools.

For 50 years, NEMC has been providing the finest complete musical instrument rental program for local community music stores. Their innovative turnkey approach can enable local dealers to offer high-quality instruments to help provide your child with the best possible learning experience.

Homeschoolers appreciate the arts. They understand the positive effect that graphic arts and music have on the developing brain and personality of children. They also understand that the public school proclivity to make budget cutbacks on music education and resources, in particular, is a disastrous mistake. It is not uncommon for families to begin homeschooling in the lower grades because the local school has eliminated music and art study from its curriculum. The study of music – especially beginning in the elementary grade level -- has been repeatedly demonstrated to increase the child’s ability in math processing, self-esteem and concentration. Playing an instrument is one of the most important academic activities a child can engage in.

If your child wants to learn to play the piano but your musical skills and/or bank account are sorely lacking in substance, Piano for Preschoolers is exactly what you need. Piano for Preschoolers is a fun and educational system that allows children to play songs on their very first try. And, whether it’s been a long time since you studied music or you’ve never played a note, Piano for Preschoolers makes it possible for you to successfully teach your preschooler to play the piano.

Every year, millions of children start piano lessons only to quit when they become bored practicing the same notes over and over again. Most of these children simply assume they have no musical talents and miss the chance to develop a love of music and the improved math skills that naturally go with it. Research comparing the effects of musical and non-musical training on the intellectual development of preschoolers and shows that preschoolers who received piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability. Whether a child is being prepared for public or homeshooling, piano/keyboard training gives them an advantage in mathematics, science and engineering.

Typically, the very best homeschooling supply companies are those that are owned and operated by homeschoolers themselves. We understand subtle nuances that are significant to homeschooling families, but that other companies might not even notice. Sing ‘n Learn is such a company. It was founded by a homeschooling couple, Fred and Sarah Cooper, who were on the cutting edge of the modern homeschooling world, beginning to teach their oldest son in the mid 1980s and their second son shortly thereafter. Both boys never attended school until college.

The Steel Drum Shop

Certain musical instruments have a powerful ability to call to mind a particular word picture or setting. A Bluegrass fiddle conjures up images of quiet, simple, rural living; a full-throttle pipe organ reminds one of austere, church services in huge cathedrals or scary Saturday night movies on Monster-Chiller-Horror Theatre; bagpipes often bring to mind graveside rites for fallen military or law enforcement people; steel drums conjure up visions of laid-back island people playing their homemade drums while gentle Caribbean breezes waft through palm trees, exotic drinks tinkle with the promise of cool refreshment and stress takes a fade on white beaches beside amazing blue water.

That may have been, but recently, this “exotic” homemade instrument of folky entertainment has become a strong presence in "serious" musical settings of all sorts and steel drums are considered for serious study by players all over the world.

Want to Play Guitar Like A Pro? Relax

Practice makes perfect…especially when it comes to playing.
After spending years studying and practicing playing the guitar, Jean Welles perfected the technique so much that she is able to teach people who have never even picked up a guitar before to play in just one quick, easy lesson.
Welles says the trick to playing proficiently is simply to relax. “When you relax your face and shoulders it helps you relax your hands. You can then play a lot faster and play without fatigue. I have taught guitar all my life.  I made my first video in 2001.”
Her instructional guitar DVDs, which includes four volumes of Worship Guitar Class lessons, are sold internationally and are available in two languages: English and Spanish.
Playing guitar was not just a hobby and profession for Welles, it was also her scholarly pursuit.  Welles received a master’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in guitar performance.

Drumstick Spinology™
Review By Michael Leppert

Every day, revolutionary discoveries occur from the most unexpected places. Who would guess that a veteran rock drummer, whose appreciation of fancy stick work would lead to a possible positive treatment for those with ADD/ADHD?

While it is still being researched in blind studies, the repetitive motion of Steve Stockmal’s Drumstick Spinology™ stick-spinning method seems to provide a favorable treatment format for children with ADD/ADHD.

Dr. Kurt Kuhn, a chiropractic neurologist and drummer, discovered Mr. Stockmal’s Spinology through the doctor’s daughter who saw Mr. Stockmal’s presentation at her school. Dr. Kuhn purchased the program and as he did the first two or three spins, he found that it was a good neuromuscular re-educator.
