“Radio Dramas Help Reluctant Readers”
By Linda Pliagas

Before the age of computers and television, American families would come together in their living rooms and huddle around the radio to listen to their favorite programs. Little did we realize what a great teaching tool these productions are.

“Writing and producing a radio drama is a real-life activity that not only draws the student in, but integrates all the language skills,” explains Don Kisner, owner of Balance Publishing Company.

His company, based in Sanger, California, has been producing and selling radio drama-related materials for grades six through adult since 1984.

While Kisner was teaching, he noticed that it was a “real problem” to get his students motivated to use language arts. As a theatre arts college major, Kisner was the perfect person to bring the excitement of radio dramas into the classroom.

A broad command of English is like nothing else. When one has a powerful grasp of the elements of our language -- grammar, spelling, punctuation, a large vocabulary, word usage, it imparts a sense of confidence and ease of communicating that is worth more than gold. Even one who occupies a "lower" station in life elevates himself in the eyes of others when he can speak intelligently and authoritatively. Conversely, one who may be highly intelligent and educated diminishes his reputation by possessing a limited vocabulary or repeatedly misusing words. Not only is a mastery of English essential -- it is also one of the most daunting topics of study for any student (and parent)!

Webster’s Dictionary defines learning as the act of “gaining knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience.” Study is defined as the “application of the mental faculties to the acquisition of knowledge.” These two concepts are so intertwined that it is difficult to separate them. In order to learn, we must be able to study and in order to study, we must learn proper study skills.

Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills, by Bonnie Terry, M.Ed. is “A fast, fun approach to improve writing and study skills.” Spending just a few minutes a day using the principles in this book, students will learn to master the study skills and techniques necessary for academic success and will enjoy an increase in self-confidence that will last a lifetime.

Read, Write & Type Learning System (RWTLS)

Fortunately for all homeschoolers who enjoy using their computers as educational assistants, software designers never seem to rest! There are great educational products constantly being developed for our Macs and PCs. No matter what topic one wishes to study or teach his/her child, there is a software program to assist.

Talking Fingers, Inc. is one of the most innovative software companies in the educational field. From their website: “The Talking Fingers approach is based on a simple idea: text is speech made visible! We use our mouths to talk, to make the sounds of words. We use our fingers (with a pencil or keyboard) to represent those sounds on paper. When children learn to link speech sounds with letters, they can use the alphabet code to write any word they can say. Their fingers are ‘talking’.”

The TFI base program, Read, Write & Type Learning System, is designed for grades K-3, to teach phonics, reading, writing and keyboard skills. With word-processing being so important a part of everyone’s work – whether high school or college students or working adults in all walks of life – teaching this vital skill to little
ones is an intelligent move and combining it with other study areas is even better.

Having the skill of writing well is a talent which can open many doors for adults.  It is naturally important to develop a strong foundation for the written word as children.  One organization which is creating a positive difference in the lives of numerous children (and adults) is Webster’s Academy.
The name Webster is synonymous with ‘words’ and ‘communication’. Founded on the principles of Dr. J.B. Webster, the Academy’s mission is to improve writing structure and style. Webster’s Academy assists students from elementary grades all the way through the university level.
Dr. Webster, the author of Blended Structure and Style taught students from grades one all the way to training Ph.D. candidates at prestigious universities, subsequently  developed a practical writing methodology along with his aunt, Anna Ingham.

In a perfect educational system, students would be taught to write using a logical and progressive approach. Elementary students would learn to write interesting and properly punctuated sentences, paragraphs, book reports and essays, middle school students would learn to write the four basic essays in a coherent manner, and high school and college students would be able to incorporate literature terms and analytical thought into their writings. Unfortunately, the educational system is not perfect and, too often, students are passed from one grade to the next without the solid foundation of proper writing skills necessary to succeed in school and in life.
