Extreme Homeschooling
by Tim Gould

There are as many reasons for homeschooling as there are parents, and that's to be expected -- homeschoolers, after all, are nothing if not a self-directed bunch. But network with enough of them and some familiar themes begin to emerge: It might be a wish to keep one's child out of an overcrowded, apathetic or dangerous public school system; it could be religious conviction, or the hope to forge a closer, lifelong bond with the child. Sometime, somewhere, a combination of factors will finally spur the homeschool-inclined parent to make the fateful leap.

But there's another homeschooling tradition that flies under the radar, owing to its infrequency, though it's arguably the oldest practice of all and sometimes produces the most spectacular results in its students. I'll call it the "artisan tradition". Singin' in the Aisles

My daughter and I sing in the supermarket. She considers this natural, being a Music Together child raised by a Music Together teacher. We've been singing every day since she can remember, and now we're adding the pop songs playing in the supermarket to her considerable repertoire. "Oh listen!" I'll say, and then I teach her the chorus to "It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To" or "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini." Only once has this habit of ours offended her adolescent sensibility: it was that time we were over by the bratwurst singing "Crocodile Rock" and a man neither of us knew spontaneously began dancing with me. Emma fled to the cereal aisle.

A Day in the Cafeteria
By Dr. Mary Hood

The cafeteria was buzzing with muted talk, each child sitting at his or her designated spot. New classes were arriving, standing in line waiting to be served. The A's lined up first, to get their pre-selected meal. Two thirds of the children, given their choice, had chosen a greasy hamburger and fries. The B's came next, to get their slice of pizza. Finally, the few straggling C's, clutching a note from their mothers, were forced to receive the salad plate. Most of the latter group came back to their chairs, immediately threw the salad down on the table and ran over to the ice cream stand in the back, where they traded a few quarters for what was to be their real lunch. Later, the salads would languish, uneaten, in the big garbage cans at the end of each table.
