Spanish for Kids is a beautifully-designed program that consists of a large array of high quality, easy-to-use materials to make the teaching and learning of Spanish a joy. The Spanish for Kids program is based upon Accelerated Learning techniques to engage both hemispheres of the brain. Therefore, it is formulated upon the premise that children learn in an atmosphere of interesting stimulus and enjoyment; learning and application. To achieve this, Spanish for Kids includes instruction and practice using multi-media materials – music, visual aids, games, cultural awareness – all in a relaxed and pleasant manner.

Spanish for Kids was developed by Leticia Smith, a native of Mexico City who has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years. She is a graduate of Texas State University and received an Accelerated Learning certificate from the University of Houston. She has twelve years of experience as a Spanish instructor, teaching students in elementary schools.

The program’s main book is 133-pages, case-bound and beautifully illustrated, with simple explanations and exercises for individual vocabulary and phrase practice. Virtually all words in the elementary level of the language are taught, including colors, days, numbers up to 1000, parts of the body, directions, greetings, “magic” words (please, thank you, excuse me, etc.) and any other words needed to converse in a medium-simple way. To solidify the vocabulary and its uses and pronunciation, there are included an interactive CD-Rom and “Building Conversational Skills” DVD included with the book.

The program also includes a CD-Rom of Songs in Spanish and a DVD of Spanish to Sign and Sing – providing sign language along with songs, to make an even stronger impression of the language upon the student. The individual (homeschool) version of Spanish for Kids has an excellent parent teaching manual with explanations of the scientific aspects of its teaching method, ways to improve your child’s learning experience, scope and sequence and game suggestions, including “Concentration” Bingo in Spanish, how to use the heavy card stock flashcards included, and many other fun and useful tools for mastering elementary Spanish.

Spanish is a beautiful and poetic language. It is probably the second-oldest of the Romance languages, having much in common with Latin, and Spain had a very prominent place in the Roman world. Through the Middle Ages to the present day, much of the world’s great literature has been composed in Spanish. With all of Central and South America except for Brazil being Spanish-speaking, Spanish rivals French as the second major Western language behind English. With Puerto Rico, Mexico and Cuba providing a great deal of Spanish-language and cultural influence to the United States, its importance increases every day and learning it is virtually a necessity for children who will grow up into a world where the Spanish-speaking world exercises tremendous influence in commerce, politics and culture.

While Spanish for Kids is recommended for elementary-grade children, it can be used very successfully by older children and adults, since it teaches the very basics of the language, from vocabulary to conjugation of verbs, gender, agreement of pronouns, etc., which could be very daunting in a more complicated setting, but as Leticia Smith has composed her program, it is clear, easy to grasp and fun!

Spanish for Kids is only $120 for the individual program. Considering that the student can use the program for a number of years – as a primary source and then as a supplement and review – this is extremely inexpensive!
