The University of Nebraska High School (UNHS) is an online program that homeschooling parents can use to create a robust college-prep experience for their students by completing the diploma program or simply by supplementing its courses to catch up on credits, take a class not offered by their regular high school or earn extra credits to surge ahead of their regular curriculum, whichever is needed by the child.

The University of Nebraska has more than 86 years of distance learning experience. Beginning in 1929, the University offered high school correspondence courses via U.S. Mail. Now, of course, the Internet has supplanted the hard copy mail as the preferred medium of exchange, and in 2001, UNHS was one of the first accredited online high schools to offer a full diploma online in 2001, making its distance learning program very easy and fast to use.

UNHS offers over 100 online courses with no start or end dates, so the enrollment is continuous, allowing students to register and begin classes at any time. The student is given a minimum of five weeks and a maximum of one year to complete a course, making it a very attractive way to achieve the desired credits. UNHS offers two curriculum tracks: A general education track or a college prep track. The college prep sequence requires more writing, making it a perfect training ground for the updated SAT, as well as the heavier writing load of most college courses.

UNHS offers fully certificated instructors and a full staff and faculty to serve their students, including two full-time guidance advisers who help students while they earn their high school diplomas and make the transition to college. Their services include Transcript Evaluation, Curriculum Planning; Preparing for College Admissions and the admissions Tests and many more services! UNHS is accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education and AdvancED, and offers NCAA-approved classes for athletes planning to transfer to a university. UNHS has strong reasons to choose its distance learning program:

  • Individual courses
  • Entire grade enrollment
  • Diploma Program
  • Highly-respected Transfer Credit
  • Performing Arts Classes
  • Academic Classes

Besides the staff of UNHS teachers that are assigned to each course and are available to offer specific help, there is also a customer service team to help with registration and other administrative issues. UNHS advises that prospective students do these 3 things prior to deciding on an online high school program:

  • Decide what you want from high school
  • Do as much research as possible
  • Have a number of questions pertaining to your goals and desires ready to ask providers

As an added bonus, most of the UNHS credits can transfer as college credits to the University of Nebraska as well. This is another question to ask in your initial contact with the University of Nebraska High School. Please visit their website, highschool.nebraska.edu, for complete information. MjL
